Grill Garden Taruriya is an outdoor-only restaurant in Taketomi's Nishi village. At lunch it serves a tiger prawn fry set meal (¥1,650-¥1,850) and an aasa (sea lettuce) champuru set meal (¥750). At night it serves beer and awamori (Okinawan spirit) under the stars. It is open 11:00-15:00 and 19:00-21:00 (closed Tuesdays). On Taketomi, where many restaurants close on weekends, one review calls it a rescue for travelers with nowhere to eat.

“I love this place. It’s an adorable garden with a kitchen run by an adorable older couple. Fast service. Amazing food! We had Yaeyama Soba, a deep fried prawn set lunch - and several nama beers and Shikuwasa sours. Most other customers only had the shaved ice, which seemed like a missed opportunity for them. Definitely go here for lunch if you’re on the island.”

“I had the beef curry for lunch and sat in the quiet garden in the shadow. It was tasty and the owner nice! Cash only, no vegetarian food.”
