Weather
Average 28.4°C (highs 30.9°C, lows 26.6°C), 208 mm of rain, mostly in the first half, and 212.9 hours of sunshine as the rainy season ends. Humidity peaks at 81 percent. From the second half of the month the weather is simply summer, and June is the first month with a measurable typhoon risk (0.6 approaches in the normals).
The sea
28.2°C. Sukuji Beach has lifeguards from 9:00 to 18:00. Okinawa Prefecture's box-jellyfish advisory runs from June 1 to September 30: wear a rash guard or wetsuit, swim inside the nets where there are any, and treat a sting with vinegar at the beach first-aid post.
Ferries and which islands to pick
The summer ferry timetable runs from April 1 to September 30 with more departures on every route, and the north wind that cancels the Uehara, Hatoma and Hateruma boats in winter has eased. The risk in this season is typhoons: when one approaches, every boat and flight stops, usually for one to three days, and routes with one to three flights a day have no same-day alternative. Keep a spare day at the end of the trip and book fares that can be changed. Every departure is on the ferry timetable page.
Crowds and prices
121,310 visitors in June 2025 (109,213 in 2026), a moderate month with prices below July and August.
What is on in June
- Haarii dragon-boat races (lunar May 4) at Ishigaki, Shiraho and Funakoshi harbours, usually in June.
- Harvest festival on Hateruma (lunar May).
- Southern Cross season on Hateruma ends in early June.
Festivals on the lunar calendar move every year; the island tourism associations publish the dates a month or two ahead.
What to pack
Summer clothes, rain gear for the first half, sun protection for the second.
Is June a good time to visit?
Late June to early July gives the best sea with fewer people than August and a low typhoon risk. Early June is a gamble with rain.
