Ishigaki vs Miyakojima: Which Okinawa Island Should You Choose?

The two southern Okinawa islands compared with official figures: flights, how you reach the smaller islands (ferries vs bridges), beaches and lifeguards, nature, cars, weather, crowds and resorts. Checked October 2026.

Ishigaki and Miyakojima are 133 km apart, both about three hours by air from Tokyo, and both have the same sea, the same typhoon season and the same winter. The difference is what you do once you land. Ishigaki is a ferry hub: five very different islands lie 10 to 90 minutes away by high-speed boat. Miyakojima is a driving island: its neighbors are joined by bridges, and the beaches are the point. This page puts the two side by side using the islands' official figures.

The real difference: ferries or bridges

Ishigaki has one ferry terminal downtown and six islands within reach: Taketomi (10–15 min, 18 boats a day in winter), Kohama and Kuroshima (25–30 min), Iriomote (40–55 min, two ports), Hatoma and Hateruma (60–90 min, two boats a day). Each island is a different day: a coral-walled village and water-buffalo carts on Taketomi, mangrove rivers and waterfalls on Iriomote (a World Natural Heritage island), cattle pastures and a flat cycling loop on Kuroshima, Japan's southernmost beach on Hateruma. Fares are ¥1,880 to ¥9,670 round trip per island. Every departure is on our ferry timetable.

Miyakojima is six islands joined by road. Irabu Bridge (3,540 m, opened 2015, the longest toll-free bridge in Japan), Kurima Bridge (1,690 m, 1995) and Ikema Bridge (1,425 m, 1992) let you drive from one beach to the next without a boat. The only scheduled boats are to Tarama (about 2 hours, one round trip a day) and tiny Ogami (15 min). The island is flat: its highest point is the 20 m cape at Higashi-Hennazaki, and there are no rivers or lakes, only a 1 km mangrove inlet at Shimajiri.

Beaches and swimming

IshigakiMiyakojima
Signature beachKabira Bay (no swimming; glass-bottom boats ¥2,300). Yonehara and Sukuji for swimming and snorkelingYonaha Maehama, 7 km of white sand; Sunayama (steep drop-off offshore)
Snorkeling from the shoreYonehara (reef close to shore, strong currents), hotel beachesYoshino and Aragusuku: coral and fish from the water's edge, paid parking at Yoshino
LifeguardsCity beach Sukuji: April 1 to September 30 with jellyfish nets; Fusaki hotel beach March to OctoberFew. The tourism association states that almost no beach on Miyakojima has lifeguards; Miyako Sunset Beach has them in July to October
Manta raysKabira Ishizaki, by boat tourNot a known manta spot

If you want to snorkel straight off the beach every day, Miyakojima has more of it. If you want supervised swimming with nets in jellyfish season (June to September), Ishigaki's city beach and the resort beaches are set up for it.

Getting around

On Ishigaki you can stay downtown, walk to the ferry each morning and never rent a car; a car helps only for Kabira Bay and the northern capes. On Miyakojima almost everyone drives: the island bus company runs six routes, the seasonal loop bus serves the airport and town, and the sights are spread across the bridges. The tourism association lists twelve rental-car companies, and Toyota Rent a Car's published general rate is ¥8,580 for the first 24 hours of a compact car (rates vary by branch). In both places, book the car as soon as you have dates for holiday periods.
