Before you pick a hotel on Ishigaki, pick an area. The island has two gateways: the airport on the east side and the ferry terminal downtown, where every boat to the other islands leaves. How far your hotel is from those two points decides whether you can make the first morning boat, walk out for dinner, and manage without a car. The airport publishes taxi times and fares, which make a good yardstick.
Taxi times from the airport
| Destination | Time | Fare (standard taxi) |
|---|---|---|
| ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort (Maesato) | 20 min | ¥2,900 |
| Ishigaki Port Ferry Terminal (downtown) | 25 min | ¥3,500 |
| Art Hotel Ishigakijima (downtown edge) | 25 min | ¥3,500 |
| Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas (west coast) | 30 min | ¥4,300 |
| Kabira Park | 40 min | ¥5,600 |
| Club Med Ishigaki (northwest) | 45 min | ¥6,300 |
| Hirakubozaki (north tip) | 45 min | ¥7,100 |
The farther west and north you go from downtown, the longer every trip becomes. A hotel in Kabira means about an hour's round trip for a dinner in town.
Downtown: stay here if you will take a boat
The streets around the ferry terminal have the most restaurants and shops, and this is the only area where you can walk to the first boat of the day. Taketomi is 10–15 minutes away, Kohama and Kuroshima 25–30, Iriomote's Ohara Port 40–45. Anei Kanko asks for 30 minutes between connections; add a 20-minute taxi ride from a resort and your morning starts noticeably earlier. There is little resort feel, but the busier your itinerary, the more downtown is worth. Hotels here: Minami no Churahana Hotel Miyahira (1–2 minutes from the terminal, large bath), Hotel Cucule (3 minutes), Hotel GranView Ishigaki The First (3 minutes, opened 2023), Vessel Hotel (6 minutes, breakfast buffet), Hotel Peace Island Ishigaki in Yashima (7 minutes, washer-dryer in every room) and Art Hotel Ishigakijima (pool and large bath, 8 minutes by taxi to the terminal).
Beach resorts: 20–30 minutes, and the shuttle rules matter
For a beach in front of the hotel, look at the west coast and Maesato. The difference between them is the airport shuttle. Fusaki Beach Resort runs a free airport shuttle for guests with no reservation needed (it can be full). ANA InterContinental is 20 minutes from the airport and runs a paid guest shuttle (¥700 to the airport, ¥500 to the ferry terminal for ages 13 and up, cash only); its ferry-terminal service helps if you will take a boat. Ishigakijima Beach Hotel Sunshine and Hotel Royal Marine Palace are on the west coast with no shuttle listed; the ferry terminal is 10–15 minutes by taxi. Check whether a shuttle is free, reserved or first come before you confirm.
Kabira and the north: 40–45 minutes, car required
Kabira Bay has the best scenery and the quietest nights, but buses are the constraint. Azuma Bus route 11 from the airport runs only at 12:15 and 15:00 (¥860 to Kabira), and route 9 from downtown has a handful of departures a day. Treat a stay here as a rental-car booking.
An outer island: 25 minutes to the terminal, then 10–90 minutes by boat
Staying on Taketomi, Kohama or Iriomote means airport to terminal (25 minutes), boat (10–90 minutes) and a pickup from the port. Your Ishigaki plans then follow the ferry timetable, but you get the village after the day-trippers leave and the night sky. Options: on Taketomi, HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island, Hotel Peace Island Taketomijima and guesthouses such as Yadoya Takenoko and Takana Ryokan; on Kohama, Haimurubushi and Risonare Kohamajima; on Iriomote, Iriomote Hotel by Hoshino Resorts, Painumaya and family guesthouses. Hateruma has guesthouses only, booked by phone in Japanese.
